Sacrilege…or Simple Honesty?
My daughter’s prayers have evolved dramatically since “Of Simple Prayers and Complex Dreams.” Now, it is my son’s turn to begin to pray, and although his prayers exist of nothing more than squinted eyes, a scrunched up face, folded chubby hands and an enthusiastic, “Amen!” We know from past experience that it’s a good start.
My husband and I are starting to reap the benefits of our “no poems approach” in teaching our little girl to pray, as we begin to see her personality come through in her brief talks with Jesus. It has also become a source of many smiles and giggles on our part.
The other night, my husband came out of the room after putting her to bed, asserting that he had probably just overheard the funniest prayer yet.
He had tucked her into her bed, arranged the pillows and read the customary stories.
“So Molly, what should we pray about tonight?” he asked (the traditional “time to pray” script.)
“I know,” her answer was quick, “let’s pray for nuthin’ tonight!”
There was no pause in which my husband could protest, as she immediately (and enthusiastically) began;
“God…Jesus, thanks for nuthin’. Amen!”
With that, she clutched her blanket to her cheek, rolled over and closed her eyes, leaving her stunned…and somewhat amused…father to quietly exit.
